Happy Mar10 Day everyone :)

As your community member Queen Boo, I’d like to showcase some art I favorited over the years based off of the Mario Series— (Rated E-T, Mario Character Focused)

Like a lot of people, I grew up on Mario games, a few things I remember—

— As a kid I would watch my big sister play Super Mario World 3 on the Game Boy Advance over and over again.

— Also as a kid, I’d play Mario Party 7 solo and pretend I was hanging out with Mario, Luigi, Peach, & Daisy in my room (we would talk about fun things such as how life in the castle is).

— I would watch Luigi’s Mansion gameplay on YouTube until I finally got the opportunity to play it myself in high school.

— Playing through Super Paper Mario & WarioWare: Smooth Moves on the Wii was a magical thing to find out blind.

— I was able to save up a bunch for Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door (OG) and play it as an adult LOL, I completed Pit of 100 before the final boss.

My username “QueenBoo” is just a giant love letter to the Mario Series.

These days I kinda have issues completing Mario games on the switch (Except for “WarioWare: Move It!!”) because it seems my priorities have shifted and my interests have expanded to other series.

At least see myself completing it in the near future.

Also friendly reminder that “Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!” (1986) is free on YouTube, and if you haven’t seen it yet, please do. Love this film despite the sad ending.

Like i’ve commented on the Valentine’s Day Art Collab ‘24,

I strongly believe Valentine’s Day should not be limited to celebrating romantic love only, celebrate your friendships, people you consider your family, your furry friends, and your independence. You have the right to love whoever you allow in your life <3

Even though I’ve been trying to hit the iron while it’s still hot, it’s a slow progress.

I’ve been learning how to properly save money in different kind of ways, sharing shift times with my art times, but I always reserve chill time too.

Biggest tip into finishing anything—my mantra has been.

“Finished not perfect”

Or on days where I feel like bare minimum,

“Eh good enough”

January-February has always given me the worst seasonal depression, and it wasn’t like it was a recent development, it could be because a lot of things such as death anniversaries and the aftermath burnout of holidays.

Fun fact: My ass still hasn’t properly put away all Christmas Decorations ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

I don’t really got a choice but have a mindset where,

If I want anything in this world I have to get it myself, because I can't change people's initiative levels so if I want things the way I want to, so I have to do it.

From birth, I was given a set of cards and I have to work with it.

Even though I feel like these two months are flying by insanely I guess I’ve done a lot. Maybe it would help if I remember to eat in the morning before I work on anything LMAO

Also guess what I completed comics after 10 years of not doing them so I’m very proud of that—

Today’s underrated Recommendation!!

The graphic novel, “It’s lonely at the Centre of the Universe” by Zoe Thorogood.

My review:

This is a multi-media, auto-biography graphic novel about the author’s bout with depression during her art career.

Its depictions of depression by Zoe are unforgiving and raw, I love it, ended up finishing this one in two days and I see myself reading this one again.

This is a NOT a graphic novel made to make you comfortable and happy, there’s no likeable heroine (and even the author likely hopes you don’t idealize her in any way), but these are people. With their own flaws, judgements, and individual depression.

If you happen to read this and it left you with uncomfortability & dread halfway, it’s doing a job. It’s holding a mirror to human nature that we don’t get to see because like it or not, we are used to media serving us happiness all the time with happy for sure endings.

I’m honestly just posting this to be vulnerable & reflect on how far I’ve come when it comes to being an animator,

In my own head— I feel… kind of like a fake honestly, & that I’m only pretending to know what I’m doing.

I’m not downplaying how much my team is making progress for me, but I just feel so much guilt for not being strong & disciplined enough.

It doesn’t help that:

Being a retail & food service worker at the same time during the holidays, you offer your soul to serve others in order to make a dime— it’s no wonder I feel like Charlie Brown in his Christmas short.

Nevertheless, I want to finish something this Christmas season, so I’m holding myself responsible.

Shoutout to @M1roArt for always being my biggest cheerleader & @Ash1car for leaving an encouraging comment on my bluesky just of me complaining.

HAVE YOU READ SUE AND CLARK YET??

2nd chapter of the webcomic, “Sue ‘N’ Clark” came out a few days ago,

@EugeneDoesArt wrote the story, thumbnailed the comic, & rendered everything (linework, coloring, shaded).

I basically assisted with character anatomy, environment, & format composition. And I’m forever grateful to have this kind of experience at all because I’ve always struggled with the kind of discipline making polished comics requires.

Truthfully, I haven’t had any kind of professional training nor internship experience, so this gives me a large idea of what to expect when I want to make my own comics.

I’ve always seen myself as someone who lacked a whole lot of discipline when it comes to starting and finishing my own large projects that I’m proud of, so I’ve been trying my hardest to try to get some kind of comic— ANY kind of comic out before the year ends,

Without spoiling what it’s about, here’s some previews. But it does feature things within the Love Me Newgrounds Universe, specifically with the Pico School Trio in college.

I’ve always had a knack for creating fanworks over original ones, so I’m starting out strong with fan comics before starting my own long running original ones.

Maybe I’m just a better collaborator and fanwork artist than original creator, who knows mannnnn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

truth is, it’s been over a year since I’ve graduated and I have not a single clue what I’m doing. Not a single smidge.

Happy Halloween Season!!

Since my trip to the Philippines, this year has been a large adventure.

Went to Vegas & had a good time (it was for my friend’s birthday & bachelorette party).

My birthday in Sept. was a whole experience as well, there’s nothing more grand than hanging out with the homies… 

Had my first ever cosplay photoshoot shortly before my trip.

Traveled to Georgia again, I’ve done a lot this week and saw many important people to say the least. **cough cough @m1roart

Life and self reflection has been settling back in since coming back home,

I’ve been working on completing my ToonTober 2024 challenge, I’ve never finished an October Art Challenge before and I’m determined.

For a few months, I’ve been helping @EugeneDoesArt with his comic and not to mention I’ve been back for chapter 2 :)

Speaking of reflection,

I have also come here to recommend a film to you all that you NEED to see in theatres as soon as possible—

If you want to see a Rated R, wonderful, graphic, body horror film, I 100% recommend “The Substance” (2024) by Coralie Fargeat!!

There’s just so many words I have for this film,

It’s one of the best horror flicks featuring body horror I’ve ever seen in recent years.

I saw this film in theatres twice, 

One where it was my day out and I was by myself, holy shit, I was squirming in my seat.

After an art gallery visit, I brought a friend to see the movie with me, and we had an amazing time.

ABOUT THE FILM

“The Substance” (2024) is about a woman who gets fired for turning 50 because she’s “too old” for stardom, so she takes drastic measures to make herself into a better version of herself.

The premise may be underwhelming, whatever, and predictable— but I promise you it’s completely worth the watch. The film just makes you think when you think it cannot get any worse, it just does. It keeps going. It’ll make you laugh, disgusted, and horrified.

It’s like watching a slow burn until what you think is the car crash, is actually a train wreck. I’m saying as much less details as I can because this film is better to watch with knowing less about it.

But as many movie goers might prefer, if you’re not in it for any kind of messaging, I’m being genuinely serious when I say if you want pure spectacle for watching practical effects, & fantastic acting, fantastical shot composition, this is it.

This film has made a permanent place into my deep psyche because of my own struggles growing up as a woman, how I saw my own insecurity represented in the characters, the people I know who I’m reminded of, and the tired resentment. Oddly enough, I felt really seen in this film.

Overall, If you want a horror film that would help you encourage yourself to love the body you are given and balance yourself, this would be it.

Visited the Philippines This Year

Here's some pictures taken lol, and I explain some perspectives & aspects of what I know about Pinoy Culture.

While I grew up in USA, I strongly believe it's important for me to be familiar where my parents came from, it's history, & overall just be knowledgable about why my culture ended up the way it is today.

Back in March, I visited the Philippines (specifically Manila, Makati, & Boracay) for family- because if there is anything my fellow pinoys & pinays know, family is everything [& it doesn't matter if you're miles away].

It was my Lola's 90th birthday week & we decided to stay from March 11th to the 25th [about two weeks],

basically stretched out day one's daylight because of time travel haha.

Walked through Los Baños' general areas.

Not only do you have to aggressively drive here, but you gotta be an aggressive walker. You gotta make your own way within walking in traffic- literally. Because over there, people share the roads with the drivers, including the stray dogs and cats! People are really good at paying attention to where they're going because they have to.

I've always been used to the presence of local swapmeets due to the fact my parents had sold roses, orchids, & other types of greenery, and i've helped them since age 5-6 (which is how your girl made that dollar as a baby haha). Seeing underground markets like this & my aunt's shop helps me feel connected to my roots.

In addition, having kids so they may help out with the shop is a very normal thing in the Philippines, and it's an important part of making your daily income.

At the bottom left, you may see signs where they state, "Justice for Kristel Tejada" in front of UP Manila's statue. This outcry is a result of lack of support from UP's college system- they insist on imposing fees onto their college students despite the free tuition law already being there. As the article states, "There are the high costs of fare, accommodation, food, etc.". Ms. Tejada, an aspiring Doctor unfortunately took her own life after being forced to file a leave of absence because of being unable to pay her P10,000 tuition ($541.74 United States Dollars) While you may believe this is cheap to us, this is unfortunately not so cheap for a lot of local folks. A whole $20 blll is worth a lot over there.

Philippines National Museum of Fine Arts

There's a section in this museum that dedicates art relating to the Philippines' involvement in World War 2. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Commonwealth of the Philippines was attacked by the Empire in Japan in 1941. At the time, the U.S. controlled the Phillippines and of course, now had to be involved in the war.

Depending on what you look at, It was also interesting and especially humbling to just see painted figures who look just like you.

Fun fact, the day the Philippines earned their independence away from the U.S. is on July 4th, 1946.

National Hero Rizal Park/ José Rizal National Monument

This monument and park is dedicated to José Rizal, a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement. He advocated for the Philippines for the end of Spain rule. He was executed by the Spanish government for rebelling and preaching Philippine Independence. Rest in Peace.

If there's something we all love, it's the damn food.

Even if you cosplay canon characters that are apart from original characters, Newgrounds is infamous for parodies of everything AND anything (Example, White-Rice07109’s Super Smash Sisters & Speedoru’s Disgraced Attorney), so go right ahead and emulate your best!

It will slightly get darker to dark around 5:00, so if you’d like, add some lights to your cosplay!!

The plan we have set is to treat the first bit like a regular cosplay gathering (running through the series/characters that show up, ending on a group pic of all our lovely cosplayers), and then devolve into a more traditional NG meet!

Meetup Etiquette: 

• Do remember this is going to be in a space designated by the con for gatherings.
• Please be respectful of any possible ones that may occur directly before or after.
• Try not to spill out on the path too much so other attendees can walk by!
• It should be a given, but please be respectful amongst another.
